TALK DESCRIPTION

Nichole Tin explores the decorative elements in The Book of Kells, a famous 9th century religious manuscript, and how its adornments influenced western calligraphy. She will also cover the evolution of western calligraphy from 17th to 19th century calligraphy into modern calligraphy, focusing on English Roundhand Copperplate and its flourishes.

A live-demonstration of simple flourishing will be held, followed by a taster session for participants to try their hand at flourishing on guided templates, using calligraphy holders and nibs. This session is suitable for beginners.

Time to dust off the wintry slump and kick off the year with a new skill. Together with The Lisserei, we are bringing the Artsynibs Workshop to Hamburg!

This is an introductory workshop tailored to beginners who wish to explore the art of writing with a pointed pen.

Led by Joyce of Artsynibs, you’ll enjoy 2.5 hours of learning to work with a nib, pen handling techniques, basic letterforms and and how to care for your writing tools. 

Course fee treats you to light refreshments, and a specially curated starter kit consisting of a nib holder, nibs, a bottle of ink, guide sheets and more!

How is handlettering different from calligraphy, and where does one begin to practise this medium? Lettering artist Nathaniel Ong gives an introduction to this craft, the different lettering styles, as well as the anatomy of letters. Participants will be able to create a simple project following the examples provided in this session. 

This session is recommended for beginners.

In this digital era, nothing says more than words created with your hands and heart.

Come spend a weekend learning the basics of modern pointed pen calligraphy in this guided 3.5-hour workshop - everything from the rich history of calligraphy tools and how to use them, to writing letters, joining them to form words, and even planning out quotes!

This class is suitable for complete beginners who want to try out calligraphy for the first time, or beginner-novices who have some experience in other forms of lettering (watercolor, brush pen etc), and want to explore other writing mediums.

1) Learning about tools, how to handle, use and care for them

2) Getting used to a pointed pen: writing form, basic strokes

3) Writing letters, forming words, practicing your writing

Are there minimum age requirements to participate in the event?

• We recommend that students be at least 10 years of age.

What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?

• Best to Grab to CzipLee. You can park in Bangsar Village II, or you can always try your luck going around the Telawi area!

What if I am late or I can't make it for the class?

• Please try to be punctual to the workshop so as not to inconvenience other participants.
• In the case that you are late to arrive at the workshop or unable to attend the workshop due to any circumstances, we will not be obliged to wait for you to arrive to start the workshop, nor provide you with a refund. However, we will leave the workshop kit at CzipLee for you to collect at your convenience.

About the Instructor

A writer and aesthete at heart, Rachel has always been in love with the power of words. Circa 2016 saw the start of her calligraphy hobby, and since then a humble interest in the art of writing has grown into a budding full-time career - something she did not even dare to dream of in its inception. While she conducts workshops, does on-site calligraphy, takes on commissions, designs stationery for events, and even has the privilege of working with corporate clients, her favourite part of calligraphy is in the personal touch it lends to writing - something that can’t be replicated.

In August, our team member, Nichole, is heading to Tokyo! She will be conducting A Tokyo Workshop Retreat: Introduction to Classical Pointed Pen Calligraphy workshop, co-organised with her Japanese host, Cana.

In recent years, Copperplate calligraphy has been adopted as an umbrella term that is used to describe a range of pointed pen calligraphy styles that is very similar. The key differences between the scripts stem from reasons like origin, key historical events and more. This style is often favoured when legibility for the art piece/project is important. As such, we often see calligraphy (in Copperplate style) being adopted in wedding invites, envelope addressing or in formal correspondence - A large portion of calligraphy works we are being engaged to write for formal invitations/events, requires proficiency in this script. In this workshop retreat, we'll be conducting: 

Half Day sessions :  Pick either Minuscules (lowercase) or Majuscules (uppercase)

Full day session: Minuscules + Majuscules retreat where we study together the whole morning to evening and head down to the shops nearby for lunch together.

Chalk lettering is a fun way to express your love for letterforms. Spice up your old grocery chalkboard or even for your event signage! Join me in exploring the basics of chalk lettering or simply to brush up your chalk art skills!

This class will guide you to gain confidence in creating your own chalkboard lettering. While a basic hand-lettering background will be helpful, there is no doubt that this is beginner-friendly (no chalkboard experience is required!) And, you get to have your own A3-sized chalkboard to bring home and practice on!

This class will cover:

• Different materials for chalk lettering

• Care for your tools and chalkboard

• Preparing the board

• Transferring a sketch to the board

• Tips on making your work stand out

FOCUS

Lettering on chalkboards serves various purposes. For this workshop, we will be focusing on some drawing basics and writing a featured quote on the board for display in your own favorite space. There will be a couple of prescribed quotes to choose from during the workshop so we can focus on learning the techniques and the drawing process. 

You get to take home the following:

• A good understanding on how to make your own hand-lettering using traditional chalk

• An A3-sized (297 × 420 mm) handcrafted chalkboard (real wood!) 

• Pencil and printer paper for sketches

About the Instructor

Nathaniel Ong is a chalkboard lettering artist in Singapore. His creative expertise on hand-lettering and illustrations is showcased on menu boards for cafes, restaurants and even on wedding events both locally and overseas.

As part of the Scribblers Collective, he continues to grow both as a mentor and an artist by conducting workshops and coaching sessions. His lettering experience also expands as he shares his skills and talent for renowned brands like Guinness, UOB and Lancaster Paris; and features in published magazines such as the Penultimate Magazine in April 2018.
